How to Access Aged Care
Practical guidance for Australia and the United States
1. Start with your situation
When you are helping yourself, a parent or a partner, start with the support needed in daily life. Write down what has changed, what help is already available and which tasks are becoming difficult.
Think about personal care, meals, transport, household tasks, social connection and the help provided by family or friends. Include the older person’s preferences in the conversation.
A practical starting point
The Administration for Community Living’s Eldercare Locator connects older adults and families with services in their community. Search by location or call 1-800-677-1116.

2. Prepare to ask for help
Before contacting an organisation, have the person’s location, the type of help needed and a short description of the situation ready.
When a service mentions Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance or another funding source, ask it to explain what applies to this particular service and person. Do not assume that one programme covers every type of help.
3. Compare options and take the next step
Keep a simple record of each call: who you spoke to, what was offered, the costs discussed and the agreed next step. Compare practical availability and the person’s preferences as well as price.
