How to Access Aged Care
Practical guidance for Australia and the United States
At a glance
A care-home quote should explain accommodation, care and everyday living costs, plus any optional charges. Ask each provider for the full amount for the person’s assessed needs. This guide helps you organise the questions; local rules and personal fee assessments still apply.
Compare the same time period
Convert daily, weekly and monthly amounts to a common period, and list upfront payments separately. Record the quote date, room, included support and assumptions. Keep a deposit separate from ongoing spending; ask about any deductions and refund terms.
Plan your next steps
Request a written breakdown
Check the country rules
Australia: ask which fee arrangements apply to you. Under the November 2025 arrangements, some residents may pay hotelling and non-clinical care contributions alongside other costs; protected arrangements may differ. US: ask the payer to confirm the specific service and setting covered. Do not assume long-term accommodation is funded by Medicare.
Plan for a change
Ask for an example of the total if care needs increase. Discuss what happens if personal funds reduce or a funding decision changes. A written explanation is more useful than a reassurance that “we will sort it out”.
Questions and useful links
Should the lowest quote decide?
Only compare options that can meet the person’s essential needs. Then consider the complete cost, location, preferences and contract terms together.
Before signing
Ask an independent adviser about major financial decisions and unclear agreements. Keep a list of unresolved items and obtain answers before committing.
