Separate three questions

It is easier to navigate care when you separate three questions: what support is needed, who can provide it and how it will be paid for.

Start with the person’s daily needs and preferences. Then identify organisations serving their area. Finally, confirm the eligibility, charges and coverage that apply to the proposed support.

Keep these questions together in a written plan, but do not assume that finding a service also confirms funding.

Check funding before relying on it

Medicare does not generally pay for long-term custodial care. This is different from qualifying skilled care. Medicaid may cover some long-term services for eligible people, subject to state requirements.

Ask the relevant programme or insurer about the specific service, provider and circumstances. Obtain written information about costs and any required approval.

Is this service covered for this person?
Is the proposed provider eligible for payment?
Is prior approval required?
What will the person pay themselves?
What happens if support is needed for longer?

Start locally and keep a record

Use Eldercare Locator to find a local starting point. Describe the support needed and ask which organisation should handle the next enquiry.

Record the organisation, contact person, advice received and agreed next action. If an organisation cannot assist, ask for the appropriate referral route.
