Start with the care schedule
Write down the help needed across a normal week, including overnight and weekend support. Ask a clinician to clarify skilled care needs. Then request quotes for that same schedule from each provider.
Plan your next steps
Identify every payer and gap
- Separate health services, daily support and accommodation. They may have different funding routes.
- Check Medicare or your health plan for the exact covered service and conditions.
- Ask the state Medicaid agency about relevant long-term-care eligibility and participating providers.
- If you have long-term-care insurance, ask for written details of benefits, waiting periods, exclusions and claim requirements.
- Add privately paid services, transport, equipment, personal spending and ongoing household costs.
- Record what happens if care needs increase or a temporary benefit ends.
Compare the real total
For home care, include minimum visits and any weekend or cancellation charges. For residential care, ask about the base fee, care-level charges, deposits, annual increases and discharge terms. Mark each item as confirmed, estimated or still unknown.
