How to Access Aged Care

Practical guidance for Australia and the United States

Home-care costs: compare a complete quote

At a glance

To compare home-care costs, price the same tasks and schedule with each provider. An hourly rate alone can hide differences in minimum visits, travel, weekend charges and what the worker is allowed to do. This guide helps you build a practical estimate in either Australia or the United States.

Write the service you are buying

List each task, the number of visits, expected length and timing. Separate clinical care from help with daily life. Include an alternative plan for missed visits and ask whether extra time can be arranged when needs change.

Plan your next steps

Use this quote checklist

  • Hourly or visit rate, minimum booking and how time is rounded.
  • Evening, overnight, weekend and public-holiday charges.
  • Travel, mileage, parking, equipment or administration charges.
  • Cancellation notice, hospital admission and worker absence arrangements.
  • Assessment, care planning and review costs.
  • Price-review dates and how changes will be communicated.

Calculate the private gap

Estimated weekly cost = agreed visits and hours × applicable rates, plus other charges. Subtract only funding or benefits that have actually been confirmed for those services. Keep one-off setup costs separate. For a monthly planning estimate, multiply a weekly total by 52 and divide by 12; do not treat every month as four weeks.

Example only: if support costs 40 per hour for 6 hours each week, the weekly amount is 240 before other charges. This is arithmetic, not a market rate or a funding quote.

Questions and useful links

Australia and United States

In Australia, confirm your programme and personal contribution. In the US, confirm the exact service covered by Medicare, Medicaid or insurance. Funding labels do not replace a written agreement about your own costs.

What should we compare next?

Compare reliability, suitability and the full price together. Ask what would happen to the budget if two extra visits became necessary each week.
