How to Access Aged Care

How to budget for aged care

At a glance

Build an aged-care budget from the person’s actual care plan, confirmed funding and everyday commitments. Keep estimates visible and review the budget when care changes. This is a planning method for families, not individual financial advice.

Set up four columns

For each item record: description, amount and frequency, who pays, and whether it is confirmed. Add the date and source of the figure. A provider quote, government notice and family promise should not be treated as equally certain.

Plan your next steps

Work through the budget

  • List reliable regular income available for care and living costs. Keep another household member’s needs visible.
  • List current housing, food, utilities, transport, insurance and personal expenses that will continue.
  • Add the proposed care schedule and all quoted charges, including setup costs.
  • Deduct only confirmed funding for the relevant services. Do not count an application as approval.
  • Work out the remaining regular gap and how it would be covered.
  • Create a higher-needs scenario, such as additional visits or a different care setting. Review whether it remains affordable.

A simple worksheet

Monthly income available: ____
Continuing living costs: ____
Care costs after confirmed funding: ____
Other regular costs: ____
Remaining amount or shortfall: ____
One-off costs and funds available: ____
Next review date: ____

Convert weekly amounts using ×52 ÷12 for an average month. Keep lump sums and refundable amounts separate from regular spending.

Questions and useful links

What if there is a shortfall?

Ask about programme eligibility, hardship arrangements and different service options. Seek qualified advice before borrowing, selling property or changing ownership. Avoid filling the gap with an open-ended family commitment that has not been discussed.

When should we review?

Review when care needs, prices, benefits or household circumstances change, and after the first actual invoices arrive.
