Understand the support you need

Respite is temporary support that gives a usual caregiver a break. Depending on local services and the person’s needs, it may take place at home, in the community or in a care setting.

Write down the dates or hours needed, the help the person usually receives and any preferences that will make the arrangement more comfortable.

If the arrangement is urgent, say so when you make contact. Availability and eligibility need to be confirmed.

Ask what assessments, referrals or other steps apply before making plans.

Prepare for a safe handover

What care can the service provide, and what is outside its scope?
What information does it need from the person or their health team?
What are the fees, transport arrangements and cancellation terms?
Who should the family contact during the arrangement?
How will routines, communication needs and preferences be respected?
