How to Access Aged Care

Practical guidance for Australia and the United States

Find aged care services

1. Start with your country

Begin with a trusted access point, then ask about support in the person’s area. You do not need to decide on a provider before learning what may be relevant.

Choose a service type

Australia: My Aged Care’s Find a provider directory.

United States: Eldercare Locator.

These are starting points for enquiries, not guarantees of eligibility or availability.

2. Prepare your enquiry

Have a brief summary ready so the organisation can direct your enquiry.

  • Location and the area where help is needed
  • The type of support being sought
  • How often help is needed
  • Language, cultural or communication preferences
  • Access or mobility considerations relevant to the service
  • Any time constraints

Share only the personal information needed for the enquiry. Ask how to provide sensitive details securely if they are required later.

Ask about alternatives

If a service is full or does not cover the area, ask whether it can suggest an appropriate official referral route.

3. Check before choosing

A listing or link does not mean that How to Access Aged Care has endorsed a provider. Independently check suitability, availability, costs and relevant credentials.

  • Does the service meet the person’s needs and preferences?
  • What will it cost, and what is included?
  • Who will provide the support?
  • What happens if a visit is cancelled?
  • How are concerns and complaints handled?
