How to Access Aged Care

Practical guidance for Australia and the United States

Help with housework

Choose the tasks that matter

List the household jobs that are becoming difficult: cleaning, laundry, changing bed linen, shopping or preparing a simple meal. Decide which tasks matter most and how often help is needed.

Agree what the person wants to do independently. A clear task list helps avoid paying for work that is not needed.

Set clear expectations

Ask what is included in a normal visit, how long it lasts and whether supplies or equipment are provided. Check exclusions such as heavy lifting, ladders, outside maintenance or specialist cleaning.

  • Who will hold keys or entry instructions?
  • How are breakages or concerns reported?
  • Are travel, minimum visits or cancellation fees charged?

Compare and review

Request an itemised quote and a written task list. Review the arrangement after the first few visits. If tasks are taking longer or needs change, ask for a review before extra work is billed.
