Describe the task the person wants to do more easily before choosing a product. Examples might include getting dressed, communicating, preparing meals or using a phone.

For equipment that affects mobility, transfers or safety, ask an appropriate professional to assess suitability. A popular product or online review cannot establish that it is right for the person.

Compare the whole cost

Can the equipment be trialled or hired?
Is setup, fitting or training included?
Are there subscription, battery or maintenance costs?
What are the warranty and returns conditions?
Does a connected device collect data or need internet access?
What happens during a power or connection failure?

Plan support and review

Confirm any funding approval before purchasing. Keep instructions accessible and agree who will maintain the equipment. Review whether it is being used comfortably and still meets the person’s needs.
