Aged-care costs in Australia

At a glance

There is no single aged-care price. Your programme, assessed circumstances, provider and chosen services affect what you pay. This guide helps you collect the right figures before agreeing to care; it is not a personal fee calculation.

Separate the questions

Ask first what care is needed and approved. Then ask what funding applies, what you personally contribute and what remains outside that funding. Keep these answers separate so an approved service is not mistaken for a free service.

Build your cost picture

Identify the programme: CHSP, Support at Home, short-term care or permanent residential care.
Keep assessment letters and relevant approval or entry dates. Ask which fee rules and protections apply.
Request the provider’s current written prices, inclusions and start date. Mark any estimate that still needs confirmation.
For a care home, separate everyday fees, applicable contributions, accommodation and optional extras.
Add transport, medicines, equipment and existing household commitments where relevant. Ask about financial hardship help if costs appear unaffordable.

Recent changes matter

Support at Home replaced Home Care Packages in November 2025. Residential fee arrangements also changed. Older articles and another person’s fees may not describe your situation. Use the current official guidance and ask for the basis of your individual calculation in writing.

What should I take to a financial discussion?

Bring the proposed agreement, quotes, relevant government letters and a summary of regular income and expenses. Ask the adviser what documents are necessary before sending sensitive financial records.

Should we sell the home immediately?
